Personal Reflection From One of Our Testers on FanDuel NJ Sportsbook

Patrik Lidin

FanDuel offers a premiere platform designed for online sports betting. They keep it fresh with new promotions, odds boosts, and alternative betting lines. This eliminates the need to shop around for new sportsbooks. It’s no surprise that FanDuel is a favorite of the masses; chances are you’ll like it too. While subjective, I find the design of FanDuel to be close to perfect, with an edge and energy that feels right. A tip is to customize the interface to dark mode, which helps with readability and gives the site and app a better look. The player props in US sports are some of the best on the market, and it’s a sportsbook that does extremely well for all popular American sports, including the NCAA.

Personal Reflection From One of Our Testers on DraftKings NJ Sportsbook

Patrik Lidin

Deciding whether DraftKings or FanDuel is the best sportsbook is like flipping a coin. For me, it’s worth having an account with both sportsbooks and simply picking the one that offers the best odds for the match or market you plan to wager on. When comparing the two, FD comes out on top as I’ve found that they have a better uptime of markets in play and a deeper betting menu. This may come down to the choice of odds providers, such as FD using Flutter while DK uses SBTech. Regarding positive differences, DK has a better rewards program and tournaments. I’d give them the upper hand in processing withdrawals as it’s generally faster and less hassle. So yeah, there are some pros and cons. If you’re looking for better rewards, go with DraftKings. If you’re primarily after extensive sports and market coverage, go with FanDuel. DK will have the most popular sports and markets covered though, so yeah, again, you can’t go wrong with either.

Personal Reflection From One of Our Testers on Bet365 NJ Sportsbook

Patrik Lidin

Bet365, the world’s largest sportsbook, recently made it to the US. One important thing to know about Bet365 is that they’ve never been about flair and style. This sportsbook is all about performance and usability. They pioneered in-play betting during the 2000s, practically creating it and have since improved live streaming coverage along with uptime of markets and keeping high bet acceptance rates. Bet365 is synonymous with live betting worldwide, and there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be associated with it in New Jersey. Overall, it’s a solid book, and they “only” rank three due to dull design and worse coverage of US sports compared to FanDuel and DraftKings.

Personal Reflection From One of Our Testers on Sporttrade NJ Betting Exchange

Patrik Lidin

Sporttrade is a legal sports betting exchange and differs from regular NJ sportsbooks. At Sporttrade, New Jersey bettors wager against each other peer-to-peer (laying and backing). Typically, odds and lines are sharper on betting exchanges than sportsbooks since the fees and commissions are lower than the margin (vig or juice) sportsbook operators apply. For Sporttrade NJ, this is true, as they always have competitive odds. The only drawback is that it’s not guaranteed that you can wager high stakes. The maximum stake depends on the liquidity in the market. This is less of an issue for New Jersey sports bettors who don’t wager thousands of dollars every bet. For me, an account with Sporttrade is a must, as it allows me to take advantage of the best odds regularly.

Personal Reflection From One of Our Testers on BetMGM NJ Sportsbook

Patrik Lidin

BetMGM has built much of its success on the back of its land-based operations, being an American household name for casino and sports gambling. They have transitioned well to online sports betting in New Jersey and stand out as a top tier-2 option with Bet365 and Caesars Sportsbook. I favor Bet365 as a pure sportsbook option, while New Jersey bettors that want to try their luck with online casino gaming and Las Vegas-style online poker rooms should give BetMGM a shot, as they have one of the best online casinos in New Jersey. BetMGM stands out the most compared to other bookies with the massive welcome offer and the MGM rewards program, which stacks between online and offline betting and gaming.

Personal Reflection From One of Our Testers on Caesars NJ Sportsbook

Patrik Lidin

On the heels of BetMGM, we have Caesars Sportsbook, an operator that recently upped its game by launching a new and improved app for mobile betting. Initial testing and impression of the new app show that the performance is better, there are fewer lags and a more seamless experience when navigating and betting. That’s a good improvement and motivated a higher rating for their mobile app, from a previous 4.0 to a solid 4.5 out of 5.0. Other than that, the sportsbook content, rewards program, customer support and other aspects are the same as before. Caesars is a high-quality sportsbook in the tier-2 landscape with BetMGM, Bet365 and Hard Rock. Similarly to BetMGM, they also have solid promotions, a loyalty program, and a grand online casino.

Fanatics Sportsbook in New Jersey was launched after Fanatics Inc. bought Pointsbet, rebranded the sportsbook, and introduced some new features. Most notable, which makes Fanatics stand out, is the concept of FanCash (FC), where you earn FC as you bet; you can then redeem this bonus cash for Fanatics team merchandise and other bonus perks like free bets and promotions. Overall, Fanatics feels fresh and should be able to continue building on top of Pointsbet's success. I wouldn’t be surprised if Fanatics climbed into the top 5 or even top 3 in our list of best NJ sportsbooks.

Personal Reflection From One of Our Testers on ESPN BET NJ Sportsbook

Patrik Lidin

If you haven’t been around the NJ online sports betting scene in a while, it’s good to know that ESPN Bet is the “new” Barstool sportsbook. If you used to have a Barstool account, your account balance, transaction history, responsible gambling settings, and any open wagers were transferred to a new ESPN BET account. Personally, I would love to see Barstool elevated and look forward to a possible relaunch under the wings of “El Presidente” Dave Portnoy. Anyway, ESPN Bet is an improvement from Penn's previous sportsbook product. It’s a tier 2 platform competing with BetMGM, Caesar’s and Hard Rock. The ESPN sportsbook offers sports betting with solid odds, lines, player props, and solid betting rewards.

Personal Reflection From One of Our Testers on Hard Rock Bet NJ Sportsbook

I’ve been paying some attention to Hard Rock Bet lately, thanks to their new SGP Max Feature, which finally allows you to combine SGPs from different games. I don’t do a ton of parlays myself, but I had to try it out as this used to be a limitation in the Hard Rock betting app. And it works! I'm even sticking my neck out and listing them as the best NJ betting site for parlays. Overall, since launching, Hard Rock Bet has improved a lot. I find more betting options, and their lame promotions are slightly better than they used to be. There are still some things Hard Rock Bet can improve, namely adding more lines and player props and beefing up the rewards offering.

Betway is an international online betting operator that has been offering its services in Europe since 2006 and can be considered a reliable and trustworthy sportsbook. Below, we’ve compared and ranked the best NJ sports betting apps, and you should consult this comparison table if you plan to do most of your betting from your mobile device. Interestingly, the iOS ratings are higher on average, 4.63 compared to Android’s 4.02. This could be due to superior device technology and performance on Apple devices compared to Android phones, which suggests you’ll get the best sports betting app experience from an iPhone or iPad.

While our findings show that DraftKings and FanDuel are alone in providing 5.0 sportsbook apps, the average combined ratings from thousands of reviews suggest that Hard Rock Bet is the best New Jersey betting app, with an overall rating of 4.7. Hard Rock Bet App is closely followed by the FanDuel App at 4.66 and the DraftKings App at 4.63.

3-step New Jersey Guide: Get Started Placing Your Bets Online Today

Getting started with betting online in NJ online sportsbooks is straightforward, and the process looks the same across all brands.

1. Creating a Betting Account With a New NJ Sportsbook

You need to start by registering an account; simply follow the instructions of the website or app, which should look similar to the below:

  1. Find an NJ sportsbook you want to open an account with.
  2. Enter the online sports betting site or betting app, then click “Register, " “Sign Up,” or similar.
  3. Provide your email address, set a secure password, and any other requested information.
  4. Accept the general terms and conditions, opt-in or out of marketing and advertisements, and click “Create Account” or similar.
  5. After that, you typically must verify your account details via SMS or email.

2. Make Your First Deposit to Add Funds to Your Sportsbook Account

Similar to the registration process, the deposit methods look similar across all betting platforms. Suppose you have the option to deposit using mobile payments on your phone. In that case, this will be the easiest and safest method since verification is made through biometric authentication, for example, Google Pay or Apple Pay, which many sportsbooks accept. From the profile dashboard, you can check your sports wagering history to keep track of the bets you place.

Important Information: KYC (Know Your Customer) Processes For Account Verification

All legal online sportsbook sites in New Jersey use KYC to check your age and identity at some point, either as a voluntary option after registering, as part of your first deposit or when making a withdrawal. The KYC process is part of regulatory requirements set out by the NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement (3), which all sportsbook operators must do to combat underage betting, money laundering, and illicit activities.

Three main KYC checks are used, which you may be subjected to at any time.

Betting on Local New Jersey Professional Sports Teams

The count differs depending on what you consider New Jersey teams. For example, the New York Giants, Jets, and Red Bulls I & II all have “New York” in their names, but they all have their stadiums or arenas in New Jersey and play their home games in New Jersey. This remains a topic of controversy, which, in some cases, has led to multiple litigations(6).

New Jersey College Sports Betting

College sports betting is legally available in New Jersey (7), but it’s important to know that in-state college teams and college games that are played inside state lines are unavailable. Considering that some states have outright banned college betting, this isn’t too bad since most games, including out-of-state player prop betting, are available.

If you want to bet online on any of the 12 NJ college teams from NCAA Division 1 and 2, you must make a quick trip to neighboring states to circumvent this limitation. I don’t recommend this, but I can sympathize with those who do it during March Madness or top college football or college basketball games.

While you can bet on pretty much anything you can imagine, these are the ten most popular sports to bet on in New Jersey.

  1. Football (NFL, CFL, XFL, NCAA)
  2. Baseball (MLB)
  3. Basketball (NBA, WNBA, NCAA, EuroLeague)
  4. Ice Hockey (NHL, CHL)
  5. Soccer (MLS, English Premier League, Spanish LaLiga, Mexican Liga MX)
  6. Mixed Martial Arts (UFC, MMA)
  7. Golf (PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, LIV Golf)
  8. Tennis (ATP, WTA, Challengers)
  9. Boxing (Heavyweight, Welterweight, Lightweight, Featherweight)
  10. Auto Racing (NASCAR, Formula 1, Moto GP)

What Sports Events You Can and Cannot Bet on in NJ Sportsbooks

✅ Can❌ Cannot
Professional sports eventsIn-state college sports (NCAA)
Out-of-state college sports (NCAA)High school sports
Entertainment awards, such as the Oscars Academy AwardsPolitics, such as Futures odds for the presidential election
Esports (Dota 2, League of Legends, CS:GO)

Luckily, the legal New Jersey sports betting industry is highly competitive, so you can bet on many types of betting markets. Some events have over a hundred markets to choose from. If you want to read more about betting options, read this part of our sports betting guide.

Market NameDescription
Moneyline OddsA standard bet on what team to win.
ParlaysA parlay bet is when you wager on more than one outcome from multiple games in one coupon.
Point SpreadsAllows you to wager on even odds, even when there are huge favorites. In some sportsbooks, this market is called the “Puck Line” in ice hockey.
Over/UnderOver/Under, sometimes called “Totals,” allows you to bet on the game's number of points or goals.
Player PropsAlso called proposition bets and involves wagering on a specific player’s performance in a game, e.g., Luka Doncic's ability to cover a point total or the number of 3s he will score in the game.
FuturesWhen you bet on, for example, “What Team Will Win the Super Bowl Next Year?”
TeasersTeasers require multiple selections like Parlays, but instead of using pre-made lines, you can move the lines by changing the spreads or totals.
Same Game ParlaySimilar to parlays, the difference is that you can combine different markets from the same game.

Live Betting and In-Play Coverage

Live betting, or in-play wagering, as it’s sometimes called, presents a unique set of betting opportunities that becomes available after a match starts. Live betting allows you to wager on games in real-time as the match progresses.

Many of the betting options available in-play are fast. For example, you can wager on how the next point in basketball is scored or who will win the next game in tennis. As such, the odds constantly change, and with markets coming and going, there is a much more dynamic online betting environment than pre-match wagering.

Livestreaming in NJ Sports Betting Sites

Some NJ sports betting sites will give you access to live streaming, including the major leagues like the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB. You’re not guaranteed 4K HD; instead, there are certain restrictions on the resolution. Still, it’s a great perk to get live streams, and it enhances the online betting experience, making it seamless to place bets while watching the games. Not all NJ sports betting sites have the same live stream coverage, and some operators have broadcasting deals with leagues like the National Football League to grant them rights to show NFL matches.

Besides the New Jersey market, several states have legalized sports betting. Many more are working on introducing a regulatory framework in the coming years to legalize online sports betting:

  • Arizona
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kansas
  • Louisiana
  • Maryland
  • Michigan
  • Nevada
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Ohio

FAQ Best NJ Online Sportsbooks 2024

On June 11, 2018, then-Governor Phil Murphy signed Assembly Bill 4111 (8) into law and legalized betting in New Jersey. Placing legal sports bets with licensed and regulated NJ sportsbooks is allowed. This was possible after the United States Supreme Court overturned The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA). The PASPA law was used to prohibit states from enacting legal sports gambling, where states like New Jersey are allowed to legalize sports betting by establishing a regulatory framework.

You can wager on the NCAA in New Jersey but only on out-of-state college teams and games. In-state matches and college teams like Fairleigh Dickinson Knights, Monmouth Hawks, NJIT Highlanders, Princeton Tigers, Rider Broncs, Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Saint Peter’s Peacocks, and Seton Hall Pirates are unavailable to New Jersey bettors.

Can I Place Bets in New Jersey if I’m Visiting or Just Travelling Through?

Good news: If you don’t live in New Jersey (not a permanent resident), you can still sign up for NJ sportsbooks, bet on sports, and withdraw money. There are three ways of doing it: Register online and bet online, register in person and bet online or register in person and bet in person. You must be a US resident, 21 years old, and physically located in New Jersey. The best thing is that you don’t have to be physically located in New Jersey to withdraw funds. If you’re from Nevada, you can withdraw from there.

What New Jersey Sportsbook Has the Best Betting Odds

At Sporttrade sports betting exchange, you’ll typically find the highest betting odds due to the peer-to-peer structure. When looking at traditional NJ sportsbooks, you’ll find that different sportsbooks have different odds. The best way to take advantage of the best betting odds is to sign up for several online sportsbooks and check which one has the best odds for the game or market you want to wager on.
