RI Player Eligibility and Specific Restrictions

Anyone 21+ physically located in Rhode Island can participate in online casinos, and 18+ for sports betting, lottery, and DFS, regardless of residency. US visitors with a valid ID are eligible to register and wager online. Restrictions include:

  • Persons on the Rhode Island Lottery’s self-exclusion list are prohibited from participating in all licensed gambling activities.
  • Gambling operator employees are generally barred from wagering; consult with your employer's HR for specific policies if you’re interested in participating in any form of gambling in the state of Rhode Island.
  • No bets on in-state college teams or events(5).

RI Geolocation Requirements

Real-money online gambling requires players and devices to be within Rhode Island's state lines. The Rhode Island Lottery Division mandates geolocation technology (GPS, Wi-Fi, IP tracking) to verify locations on desktops, laptops, and mobile devices, ensuring compliance on licensed platforms(6).

Rhode Island’s online gambling includes various real-money games of chance, including:

Online Casino Gambling

One online casino, launched March 5, 2024, with casino games such as online slots and live dealer table games (blackjack, roulette) via desktop and mobile apps, operated by Bally’s (Gamesys) with Stakelogic live dealer support from a 4,000 sq ft studio at Twin River Lincoln(7). Welcome bonuses include 100% cashback up to $100 (no wagering requirement).

Online Sports Betting

Legal since March 2019, with online sports gambling sites launched in September 2019. Only one sportsbook is available, Sportsbook RI. Covers NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and college sports (excluding in-state teams), offering single-game bets, parlays, prop bets, live betting, teasers, and futures. Limited bonuses due to the monopoly, and an overall poor offering(8) compared to sports gambling sites like DraftKings, BetMGM, and FanDuel available in other states.

Daily Fantasy Sports

Make sure to use the promo code 'RIPICKS' when signing up to PrizePicks RI.

Legal for RI players 18+, daily fantasy sports operates in Rhode Island(9) through active platforms like PrizePicks, which offer real-money contests. PrizePicks allows users to pick 2–6 players, predict More or Less on stat projections across NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, CFB, WNBA, esports like CS2 and League of Legends, soccer, and more, with lineups matched by type and experience level. Available on iOS/Android; payouts via bank transfer, PayPal, etc., are processed immediately after the game.

There are two payout paths for the DFS in Rhode Island:

  • Win Your Group: Highest score earns the group payout (split if tied).
  • Winning Lineup (Minimum Guarantee): Hit projections for Flex Play (miss up to 2) or Power Play (all correct), up to 2000x payout.

Horse Racing and Pari-Mutuel Wagering

Horse betting is limited to simulcast wagering at Bally’s Twin River Lincoln Casino Resort and Bally’s Tiverton Casino & Hotel, or online via licensed advance deposit wagering (ADW) platforms like TwinSpires (Churchill Downs), TVG (FanDuel Racing), NYRABets (New York Racing Association), and 1/ST Bet (1/ST Racing). Bettors wager on out-of-state thoroughbred and greyhound races, with payouts determined by the pari-mutuel pool (total bets minus takeout). The Rhode Island Lottery Division oversees operations.

Prediction Markets

With the explosion of prediction market platforms, there are now additional ways to bet on sports beyond Sportsbook RI, and even make event predictions on politics and the economy. Several platforms operate under federal agreements and are open to users in Rhode Island.

Other Forms of Online Gambling in Rhode Island

  • Online Poker: Legal since 2023, but not offered due to live dealer requirements and low margins.
  • Lottery: RI iLottery, operational since 2020, offers instant wins and keno online for 18+ via RILot.com or the app.

The Rhode Island Lottery Division mandates operators to provide the following in support of and education about responsible gambling:

  • Transparent terms and easy-to-understand promotions.

National and Local Responsible Gambling Resources

RI Self-Exclusion System From Online Gambling

The Rhode Island Self-Exclusion Program allows voluntary exclusion from online gambling, casino gaming, and sports betting at Bally’s Twin River Lincoln Casino Resort(10) and Bally’s Tiverton Casino & Hotel(11).

You can self-exclude for:

  • 1-year.
  • 5-year.
  • Lifetime period.

Applications are submitted in person at the casino Security department (Lincoln: 401-475-8220; Tiverton: 401-816-6000) with a valid photo ID. Enrolled individuals are barred from all licensed gambling activities, cannot collect winnings or accept complimentary services, and lose Rewards Club benefits, check cashing, credit, and promotions.

Patrik Lidin

“Please note that any pending winnings you have at the time of self-exclusion are forfeited(12). Forfeited winnings, up to $150,000 per year, are transferred to the Rhode Island Council on Problem Gambling to use for research and prevention. In other words, you may want to complete any withdrawals ahead of self-exclusion. At the same time, leaving that window open puts you at risk. I would consult with local representatives of the self-exclusion program if I had a problem.”

Patrik Lidin, Online Gambling Expert

Removal requires management and Rhode Island Lottery approval after the 1- or 5-year period. On the other hand, lifetime exclusions are permanent (cannot be revoked).
